The book signing for Art Martinez de Vara’s Beneath Sacred Ground has been rescheduled to June 26, 2024 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. The event will still take place at the Witte Museum.
Learn about the lives, struggles, and ethnogenesis of the residents of Mission San Antonio de Valero (the Alamo) by attending the Book Release and Signing of BENEATH SACRED GROUND by Art Martínez de Vara. The evening will be filled with conversation from experts on the topic, including Texas Heritage Project’s Director Rudy De La Cruz, Clint McKenzie, Raymond Hernandez, and, of course, Art Martinez de Vara.
The book includes a full transcription of the original Spanish records, dating from 1706 to 1782, as well as modern Spanish and English translations for each entry. The records are annotated to provide information not contained in the original manuscript, such as indigenous names, ethnonyms, family structures, compadrazgo relationships, social status and political offices held. In this way, Beneath Sacred Ground gives us an entirely new view of the lives of the people of Mission San Antonio Valero, revealing stories of tragedy, love, resistance, culture, and more.
